It’s Time to Learn How To Craft A Successful Sales Pitch
When we write a written sales pitch, your objective is just like a verbal sales pitch: to close a sale.
However the written pitch is slightly different from the verbal pitch; in that, you don’t enjoy the benefit of your appearance, facial expressions, the tone of voice, and a firm handshake. All you have is your mighty words to make a pitch which is professional but personal, brief yet compelling.
So how do you do that?
Do your homework
Before you even think about crafting and sending your sales pitch, be sure you know the person and the company you are pitching by doing a good research first. Inform yourself about the latest news, main executives and sales figures. You can get the help by using Google, Google Alerts, by visiting the company website, and by investigating their social media profiles.
And don’t send a blind pitch like “To whom it may concern,” make sure to find out the full name of the person you are pitching and spell it correctly.
Hi, my name is…
After addressing the individual properly, introduce yourself in a brief sentence that gives your name and highlights the most leading fact about who you are.
For instance, “My name is x and I’m the founder of x.com, a website for mom entrepreneurs.”
Once you are done with this, you are ready to move onto the body of your sales pitch.
Opening statements
A sales pitch cannot be feeble.
State your purpose for crafting it with confidence and make sure you include the personalized details that show your audience that this isn’t a cold call.
You may say, “I recently saw your press release about expanding into the application development and I am writing as I am the perfect person to head up your team.”
Give a summary
Strengthen your opening statement by summarizing your success, experience, and achievements in maximum two paragraphs.
This will also take some editing to get it down to a brief but an informative description. Work on it for a couple of days if its necessary and get it done right before you send it. As a bonus, you will be able to reuse this short bio in other places as well, such as your company website or sales brochures. If you need any help, consider hiring a skilled copywriter who has a great experience in writing sales pitches.
Short and sweet
Don’t make the mistake that most small business owners do by writing a long-winded sales pitch.
Business owners are just like proud parents, wishing to share every little detail regarding it. However, don’t do that.
Instead, keep it brief. By doing this, you can hold your reader’s attention from the beginning until the end, which will increase your chance of landing the sale. A good guideline for the perfect length for the sales pitch is mostly typed sheet or single computer screen if you are using an e-mail.
Ask for it
At the end of your sales pitch, ask them what you really want. It is as simple as that.
Check your spelling and grammar
Pause!! Don’t hit the send button. Scan your e-mail and document for spelling and grammar errors. Then recheck it again. And again. When you are sure your pitch is now error-free, read it aloud and then check it again. Nothing says –unprofessional– as loudly as grammar and spelling errors do. Most word processing programs will let you trap errors, however, don’t rely solely on them.
Deliver
Once you are done with the above steps, go ahead and then send that sales pitch.
Follow up
It sounds simple, isn’t it? Yet the majority of individuals don’t do it.
You can stand out from the rest of the crowd and maximize your chances of landing the sale by following up.
For starters, close your sales pitch with the promise to follow up. “I will follow up with you in a couple of days to discuss working together,” or something along those lines shall work just fine. Then, mark down your follow update in the calendar or to-do list.
Finally, just DO IT.
Lather, rinse, repeat
Once you have made a few successful sales pitches, then save your basic pitch outline or template to your desktop. That way, the next time when you have to write a sales pitch, you won’t have to start from the beginning. You can simply fill in the template with the appropriate details and send it along.
