Struggling With Diabetes? Check Out These Life-Saving Tips!
Though many people believe that diabetes is destructive, modern medicine has come up with some very effective treatment methods, both for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. But how do you distinguish between the two types and what is the best way to manage your health after you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes? Here are some important guidelines that will offer you the best advice when it comes to improving your quality of life while making sure that your condition is always under control.
Distinguishing Type 1 From Type 2 Diabetes
Both types of diabetes derive from your body’s difficulty to produce the required amounts of insulin. They both manifest with some very similar symptoms, with the most common ones being nausea, fatigue, vision difficulties, weight loss, and a higher risk of infections.
Type 1 diabetes usually develops from a fairly young age, as a person’s body lacks the biological capacity to produce the required amount of insulin. It is widely believed that this form of diabetes is an autoimmune condition, with one’s body actually attacking itself.
Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, usually comes as a result of aging. As our bodies age, insulin production decreases, making us more susceptible to the disease.
Dealing With Type 1 Diabetes
- Daily Insulin Treatment
Most of the treatment for type 1 diabetes relies on increasing your insulin levels. Depending on your doctor’s instructions, you’ll have to take insulin regularly, either by injection or an insulin pump.
- Nutrition Is Key
Team up with a nutritionist and start eating healthier to help your blood sugar levels remain stable. This can easily be done with foods that have a lower glycemic index. High-carb foods like white bread or sweets can probably worsen your condition, and therefore must be consumed in moderation or as per your doctor’s recommendation.
- Hit The Gym
Exercising can work wonders, especially when it comes to helping your own body stabilize your blood sugar levels on its own. Cardio seems to be the best workout for diabetes.
- Always Check Your Blood Sugar Levels
The only way to understand how much insulin you need to take every day is by monitoring your blood sugar levels frequently. Experts suggest doing that before everyday activities like driving, jogging, or eating.
Dealing With Type 2 Diabetes
- Your Weight Matters
Animal fats and carbohydrates have been shown to make the condition worse which is why diabetics are often advised to monitor their consumption of such foods. Foods high in saturated fats and carbs can often lead to weight increase and destabilize your blood pressure and sugar levels.
- Insulin Doses
Contrary to type 1, type 2 diabetes doesn’t require a daily insulin intake. Yet, there are times when people suffering from the condition resort to insulin supplements, but this doesn’t happen that often.
- Metformin Medication
Metformin treatment seems to be the go-to solution when it comes to type 2 diabetes. It is conducive to lowering your blood glucose levels, benefiting body procedures associated with insulin.
- Hit The Gym
Once again, exercising is required to resists diabetes’ symptoms. However, this time, aerobics is preferred to cardio.
- More Solutions
If insulin injections are not suitable for you, there are other solutions available as well. Sulfonylureas could be your ideal medication, as it helps your body produce more insulin, while Thiazolidinediones increases your body’s sensitivity to insulin.
Wrapping It Up
It’s important to remember that, despite the condition’s seriousness, you can continue living a fully functional and happy life, if you follow the right steps and treatment.
