Universities In America Are Feeling The Bite Of Fewer International Students
The United States of America is still on edge under the Trump Administration. Majority of the Americans are vocally expressing their thoughts on Trump’s exclusive ways since the day he resumed office. Celebrities, women, and the human rights activists have something to say with how he’s carrying the country.
One of the heated topics under his term is his plans on making America great again for the Americans. He wants to give more jobs to the Americans and treat the sickly Americans by eliminating the migrants of the country. He explicitly said that the international races are the ones that are ripping off the country. As a result, he is slowly bringing back these races home. It all started with the DACA repeal, and now, the universities are hurting its economy because they are losing international students more than expected.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA is a program that was initiated by the Obama Administration. It aims to protect children of undocumented parents from being deported. These children are called the Dreamers- children with American dreams. Thousands of children have been given equal opportunities to study and work in America through this program. Enters Trump.
Under the current administration, lots of changes will be implemented including the possible repeal of DACA. This can hurt the U.S. economy in many possible ways, but mostly labor and education. Migrants are one of the major sources of labor in the country and repealing this act will force undocumented people to leave the land.
Universities are hurting
The DACA repeal is not the only reason why universities are losing international student, although it is one. We always hear in the news how Trump can be so insensitive with his words and his tweet. This can directly impact the people’s decision-making process. He sometimes promotes racism and intolerance to the minority and other races living in the U.S. He is also attacking countries like China who supply brilliant students and business to the country, among other countries. With his insensitive remarks, some Chinese are already hesitant on sending their kids to study in America.
Just last year, more than 1 million students were enrolled in universities across America. But because of Trump’s strict immigration rules, there is a huge chance that this number will drop. The lesser the students, the lesser incomes for universities.
Immigration orders
The DACA repeal has still a long way to go before it becomes final. That’s why the administration is hitting immigrants in other areas. One of the reasons why students are withdrawing applications is because of the strict immigration executive orders. Embassies are targeting those who still have to get their visas. A lot of international students have already been declined of a student visa. For those who are already in, they fear that they might get deported when their visas expire, putting their security at risk. Some also fear of not being able to renew visas and not being able to re-enter once they leave the country. All these and more are making the dreamers turn back around.
International students who are currently enrolled may think they are safe but they are not. Embassies are said to lessen their chance of getting hired. In that way, they will still be able to monitor the number of immigrants who are holding down jobs in America.
Hostile environment
It’s greatly felt America is becoming more hostile when treating people with color and race. News from all over the country spread where people are using racist words and jokes. Does this mean that racism increased? Not necessarily. It’s just that these people earned courage by watching and hearing the comments of the president. They somehow feel entitled to being mean since they are in their own territory.
The rise of white supremacists also came in like a strong typhoon surge. They feel inspired by driving these people out that’s why they do it in broad daylight. May it be parents or the students, the hostile and somehow racist atmosphere is what’s stopping these students from enrolling. The language barrier, expensive tuitions, and hostile environment are somehow too rigid for a kid to learn and grow.
