Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman and More Female Stars Joining Marvel Phase 4
Aren’t you excited over Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? A combination of both films and TV shows, Disney (who own Marvel Entertainment) promise to build upon the success the Infinity Saga has enjoyed for over a decade. What’s more, timelines on the shows will affect events in the films, which will be a first in the franchise.
Movies In Production
Making the announcements at Comic-Con, Kevin Feige (Marvel president) confirmed that Phase 4 movies were already in production, including Black Widow, The Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Blade, and Thor Love & Thunder, to mention but a few.
Naturally, more movies in the MCU mean an introduction of new talent into the franchise in addition to the recalling of some names whose time in the cinematic universe, we thought, must have really been up. One of them just so happens to be Natalie Portman, but more on her in a second.
At the final battle in Avengers: Endgame, we got to appreciate Marvel’s female superheroes on the big screen, and sooner rather than later, we’ll be doing that again. Brie Larson already set the stage with Captain Marvel, and Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, and Natalie Portman are all following in her footsteps.
All three were present at the SDCC, with Jolie being the first one to confirm that she’d landed a starring role in The Eternals. The 44-year-old actress will star alongside Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kumail Nanjiani.
Elizabeth Olsen, otherwise known to you as Scarlet Witch, also revealed that her time in the MCU was nowhere close to over. The actress will be Benedict Cumberbatch’s co-star in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie, and will also star in WandaVision, a series that will revolve around her character and Vision. Wow! ScarJo, on the other hand, confirmed that the long-awaited Black Widow standalone would be hitting our screens real soon.
Jane Foster aka Mighty Thor
What caught everyone by surprise, however, was the re-introduction of Natalie Portman, seeing as her character (Jane Foster) has been missing in action for six years now.
First introduced in 2011’s Thor as the god of thunder’s love interest, Foster was not in Thor: Ragnarok and was also a no-show in all the Avengers films where Thor was present.
To explain her absence, the films revealed that Foster and Thor broke up, and that she was off doing what she does best; being an astrophysicist.
No one deserves it more than Natalie PortmanInterestingly, Portman being back wasn’t even the biggest surprise of all. Instead, it was the role that she would be playing that created shockwaves. She’ll still be Jane Foster in Thor Love & Thunder, but with a little twist. The actress will also portray Mighty Thor, the female version of the character Chris Hemsworth plays. If you don’t read Marvel comic books, you must be really surprised!
And guess what? Mighty Thor is as worthy as they come, meaning that she’ll wield Thor’s hammer in the movie. Are you mind blown yet? Making the announcement was Taika Waititi who directed Ragnarok, and he was accompanied onstage by Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), and Portman.
