When people say the word “self-care” nowadays, the first thing you’d think of is skincare, or maintaining a healthy routine, or even blowing some steam off with Netflix. What most people don’t realize is that self-care is so much more than that! It’s about valuing yourself enough to put your benefit before others, helping you maintain the best version of yourself for your professional and personal relationships.
Here’s what we’ve learned about self-care thus far and what we recommend you start practicing asap.

Set strict boundaries & turn off notifications
There’s a fine line between being invested in your work and being overly obsessed with it to the point that you forget about your personal life. That’s never good, and if you keep up with this routine of all work and no play, you’re bound to experience extreme burnout.
Here’s what you should do: build a gateway between your personal and professional life so that one cannot spill into the other. Set a time to check your email or Slack, and stick to the routine. Turn off notifications from all apps that have to do with work and check them on your own time! One of the luxuries of being a boss is deciding what happens when. For emergencies, you can get your employees to call or text you.

Have friends and a life outside of your industry
Often people think that maintaining a close social circle is the best way to maintain a personal life as well. Sure, having close ties within your industry does come with its own benefits but, you can’t even begin to imagine all the ways out-of-industry friends can help you out during difficult times, for example, if an important deal falls through, or that big client pulls back his business. Out-of-industry friends give you a unique perspective that so rarely comes from people within your industry. Cherish that.

Cultivate healthy habits that are enjoyable
In this day and age, it’s difficult not to get caught up in the hustle culture. Sure, if you want to achieve your goals, it’s important to put in that hard work but, in an attempt to fix your professional health, don’t ignore your personal health. Maintain self-care habits that keep you physically and mentally nourished. This includes simple things like eating healthy, taking a yoga class, walking your dog, or just chatting the evening away with a friend.

The Takeaway
At the end of the day, you have to remember that there’s more to life than work. Take some time off for self-care to put that extra heart and soul into your work and life.
