Billie Eilish Urges Billionaires to Donate at WSJ Innovator Awards

Billie Eilish has never shied away from using her voice, but this time, her words echoed louder than any chart-topping hit.

The “Birds of a Feather” singer took the stage at the Wall Street Journal’s 2025 Innovator Awards in New York City, calling on the wealthiest in the room to step up and support those in need.

At just 23, Eilish pledged nearly $12 million of her own earnings to charitable causes, proving that change often begins with action.

A Bold Message for the World’s Richest

Standing before an audience of business icons and celebrities, Eilish spoke with conviction about compassion and responsibility.

Right now, the world feels dark and heavy,” she shared. “People need help, not someday, but now. If you have the money, use it for good, give it to those who need it most.”

Her message wasn’t aimed at one person but at an entire culture of wealth accumulation. Still, her comments carried extra weight as Facebook cofounder Mark Zuckerberg sat in the crowd, one of the richest individuals alive, with a net worth estimated at $230 billion.

With a hint of humor but clear intent, Eilish added, “Love you all, but let’s be real, some of you have a lot more than me. If you’re a billionaire, why stay one? No hate, but seriously, share the wealth, shorties.”

While the crowd responded with loud applause, witnesses noted that Zuckerberg stayed quiet. His wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, was also in attendance to receive the Philanthropy in Science Innovator Award.

Eilish’s Commitment to Giving

Eilish wasn’t just talking the talk. Earlier in the evening, host Stephen Colbert revealed that the Grammy and Oscar winner would donate $11.5 million from her “Hit Me Hard” and “Soft Tour” to projects focused on food equity, climate justice, and pollution reduction.

Colbert praised the move, saying, “That’s something special. On behalf of everyone, thank you, Billie, for leading by example.”

Her actions reinforce a message she’s repeated throughout her career, that art and influence hold power when used to create change. Fans have long admired Eilish’s environmental advocacy and honesty, but this bold act of philanthropy elevated her commitment to a global stage.

The Zuckerberg and Chan Mission

Interestingly, the evening brought two different approaches to wealth under one roof. Zuckerberg and Chan founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) in 2015, pledging to donate 99% of their Facebook shares over their lifetime. Their mission focuses on advancing education, curing diseases, and building strong communities. Since its inception, CZI has donated over $7.2 billion toward those goals.

The couple, married since 2012, share three daughters, Maxima, August, and Aurelia. and have long expressed a desire to make philanthropy a central part of their legacy. Yet Eilish’s words reignited the conversation about how quickly and directly the ultra-wealthy can act when global challenges intensify.

A Night That Sparked Reflection

Also present at the star-studded event were Hailey Bieber, who recently sold her Rhode skincare line to e.l.f. Beauty for $1 billion, filmmaker Spike Lee, actor Ben Stiller, and “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. But amid the glamour and recognition, Eilish’s message stood out as a heartfelt reminder that purpose matters more than prestige.

Her candid tone cut through the evening’s polish, reminding everyone that generosity isn’t about optics, it’s about empathy. The 23-year-old artist continues to use her influence to challenge norms, both in the music industry and beyond.
