HBO Didn’t Submit These GoT Stars’ Names for Emmy Nomination, So They Took Matters Into Their Own Hands

Game of Thrones came, we watched it, and the series conquered our hearts. No matter your feelings about season eight, you have to admit that the motion pictures adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s fantasy world is arguably the best thing to ever hit our screens.

The faces you see when you think Game of Thrones

Throughout the show’s run, members of its cast have won multiple awards, and they are set to win quite a few more. HBO, the network which proudly brought us the series, submitted Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke for Emmy Award consideration, but left out some other huge names affiliated with the hit show while at it.

Taking Matters into their Hands

Not wishing to be left out in the dark, some of these actors took matters into their own hands, among them was Gwendoline Christie who plays Brienne of Tarth. The actress and her managing team took it upon themselves to submit her name for consideration, paying the $225 fee required for name entry.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Carice van Houten (Melisandre) and Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) also paid the entry fee, effectively looking out for themselves.

Christie nailed it with Brienne of Tarth

Guess what? All three received Emmy nominations! Christie was nominated for the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, while van Houten is in consideration for the Outstanding Guest Actress. Alfie Allen was also nominated in the same category as Christie, but of course, in its male equivalent.

Given how well Christie portrayed Lady Brienne, it is actually surprising that this nomination is the first time the actress has been considered for this prestigious award. She was definitely over the moon upon receiving the news, taking to Twitter to express herself.

That she took matters into her own hands and got rewarded for it has created quite the social media buzz, with user @JulieDiCaro saying that the actress had just demonstrated why we should always look out for ourselves. BuzzFeed even went as far as labeling Christie an icon.

Why Were They Left Out?

You must have asked yourself why HBO failed to submit these actors for consideration, no? The Hollywood Reporter has a convincing argument as to why this might have happened, saying that the network limited the number of names to avoid overcrowding the awarding categories. With Game of Thrones featuring a cast that’s too big to count, many talented actors, unfortunately, had to be left out.

Their nomination is proof of the show’s greatnessThe news outlet also continued to report that it is actually relatively common for actors and actresses to personally submit their names for Emmy consideration, but rarely do these submissions result in nominations. That it happened for all three members of the GoT cast is evidence enough of how great the show

The series also made history by receiving a total of 32 nominations, the most a drama series has ever had. Even after drawing it curtains, GoT is still flexing its weighty muscle, and deservedly so. In addition to the show’s actors being nominated for various categories, the show itself is also in consideration for some prestigious awards, including the best drama. You think they’ll take home the win? Let’s just wait and see!
