Then and Now: The People Behind Popular Memes

by The HashtagChatter Team

Memes. It’s rare to come across a post on social media or an article online without them. These photos, whether professionally taken or not, a screengrab from movies or shows, have become so popular it’s safe to say it’s unthinkable to post anything on the internet without including them to illustrate a point, often touched with humor. Memes are widely used, and one will often have different versions, tailored to the posts they appear in. But have you ever wondered about the people behind them? Who they are, what they do, what are they up to now, even what they think about their images being used anytime and everywhere? Well, you’ve come to the right place then. If it’s memes you want, then it’s memes we shall give. If you’re curious about the story behind them, then by all means, you’ll find them here too. Sit back, relax with a cup of coffee or soothing tea, and find out more about these internet stars.

From Sand to Success

Little did this kid know that he was going to turn out to be one of the most used icons in the history of internet memes. We have all seen that little kid who looks like he has just pulled off something pretty spectacular and really proud of it as well. But that’s not exactly the story behind the photo.

The truth is, he was just trying to eat some sand. Yeah! Believe it or not, he was just trying to do what every normal kid attempts several times in a day: eat things he shouldn’t! While the real story has very little to do with meme’s popularity, his expression is just perfect for posts where the impossible happened and people are feeling darn proud of themselves. So the next time you’ve pieced together an Ikea shelf without wanting to scream, here’s the meme to celebrate your success!

It Wasn't Me!

Who will ever be able to forget disaster girl, who became the icon for whenever you wanted to portray a revenge scenario with a meme? It was probably not her fault that the house in the background caught fire, but the look on her face is enough for us to have doubts. Anyone who’s seen Firestarter knows what little girls are capable of!

Well, said little girl is all grown up and apparently still has a thing for fires. But this time, it’s for campfires. No harm in that–campfires are nice, and with marshmallows, well, definitely more than nice. Plus, she looks a lot less evil in the photo. But don’t forget to keep away from fires, people!

Showing Some Discontent

We’re taught to just keep quiet when we have nothing nice to say, but there isn’t exactly a rule about not showing displeasure, is there? Enter this meme, which perfectly shows discontent. Who can ever forget this little girl’s judgy facial expression? It’s a classic.

Kids don’t have the restraints adults have, but of course, it doesn’t mean she grew up judgmental or anywhere close to it. We hope that if she does become a meme again now that she’s older, it’s to illustrate posts about being happy–because that’s what she looks like in a more recent photo. But for as long as people do questionable things, the judgy little girl meme is here to stay.

I Dunno

Ever so often meme pictures get taken from shows, and the genre it often comes from is comedy. The picture to the left might seem familiar to you, not only because it has been used in various memes throughout the years, but also because it is taken from the show Good Luck Charlie. The character in question is Charlie Duncan, played by child actress Mia Talerico.

Talerico had an early start in Hollywood. And by early, meaning at 11 months, she was already a working actor. That’s right. At an age where most kids refuse to be weaned, still in diapers and trying to walk, Talerico was getting paid. She was already a professional at something. Sure gives another meaning to the saying having an early start, doesn’t it? Good Luck Charlie only ran for 4 seasons but it was enough for Talerico to skyrocket into stardom, thanks to the meme.

The Funny Dog

We as humans like to see ourselves as special and therefore memes quite often feature us as a species. But that does not mean we should forget about the fact that there are some cute critters out there which also have been made into internet meme stars. Dogs, especially, can give humans a run for their money when it comes to memes. Cute in whatever size, they just get cuter with whatever silliness they get into. Unlike humans.

This confused-looking dog is probably something that many people will remember. The dog in question is actually located in Japan and goes by the name of Kabosu. Kabosu memed her way to internet fame when her owner, a kindergarten teacher, posted photos of her in a blog. As of this writing, Kabosu is sixteen years old and we can only imagine, a lot cuter.

Looking Extra Happy

Memes are used because there is just something about that particular moment when the original photo was taken that sets the entire mood. But there are also moments when people on the internet might read too much into a specific moment. This is exactly what happened with Laina Morris,  known for the stalker girlfriend meme. In reality, she’s the exact opposite of the meme but due to how it’s used, caused some issues for her.

People went after her. If that’s not clear enough, let’s put this another way: people started stalking her. Never the best outcome of any situation, tsk. Morris herself stated that “Strangers were coming to my personal Facebook page and contacting my friends. They were able to discover where I worked and tried to get access to my college records.”

Adored by Cameras

Unless it’s a professional photoshoot or one is rich and vain enough to hire a personal lighting guy, there’s just a very little possibility of looking really good on camera. Especially when one just came right from exercising. Forget about the pink glow of health–it’s more like looking sweaty, cross, and red as beets! Except for Zeddie Smith. The very photogenic runner!

As if mere mortals who’d rather reach for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups than dumbbells already don’t feel bad, Smith’s photo-turned-meme was taken during a race. There’s no justice in the world at all, is there? Ah, but we’re just kidding. Memes are often negative and it’s safe to say that Smith’s is the exact opposite of them. Wouldn’t it be great to have more like his? “I feel special to be a part of a joke that is in good humor because the Internet can be cruel at times,” he said, “and jokes might get twisted the wrong way. These are all primarily amusing. It’s incredible that everyone seems to enjoy it. It’s flattering in its most basic form to become known across the Internet.

Sweating to Keep It In

If there is one meme that everyone simply has to be familiar with, it’s this guy  who is sitting next to a girl in class. Many people have speculated as to why he looks so tense in the picture. Is he going to ask her out? Is he unwell? Lots of room for interpretation. What happens if that’s the case? A lot, and really, a lot of people that speculate about the real story behind it.

It turns out the photo is merely the result of the guy goofing around with his friends. He does have on regret regarding the popularity of the meme: “Being internet famous is cool. But I regret not copyrighting the photograph right away because I could have made a lot of money there!”

Everyone's Favorite Antisocial Feline

Dogs are popular internet memes, but the cats are catching up. The most popular cat meme is probably Grumpy Cat, called so because of his facial expression. While a person looking like this would set off red flags and have everyone staying far away, on a cat the exact opposite happened. Animals really can get away with anything!

Though popularly known as Grumpy Cat, her real name is actually Tardar Sauce. Unfortunately, this little kitty is no longer with us. She passed away in 2019 due to health complications. Tributes were posted online from all over the world. While no longer with us, the laughter brought on by her meme lives on.

An Evil Laugh?

A certain curse that seems to follow a lot of the individuals who have become memes is that they at times get attributed the wrong name. This happened to the person who is usually featured in this meme. His real name is Kyle Craven, but his picture has been used in memes which are usually called Bad Luck Brian. The particular look on his face is often used to denote something sinister.

A more recent photo of Craven shows him less sinister. Thankfully. Looking pretty much like any normal person, it’s hard to imagine that not too long ago his photo became a meme. Maybe as the hormones settle when one grows up, sinister thoughts are also left behind. Fingers crossed!

Being Way Too Happy

There are a  lot of memes that would never have gone viral if not for irresistible urge for wordplay. The girl in the picture to the left is perhaps not as known as the other people behind famous memes discussed here so far, but just one look at her and it’s clear what she’s trying to say: Ermahgerd!

The name of the girl in question is Maggie Goldennerger. As seen in her more recent photo, it’s been a while since the photo-turned-meme had been taken. It’s always great for someone to be as excited as she looks with books, honestly. Reading is always great, and books are always wonderful!

A Bit More Sad Than Necessary

While others have become known within the meme space of the internet because of their devious smiles, others become famous for something that’s pretty much the opposite. So, who’s the tearful lady in this meme?

She’s actually Silvia Bottini from Italy, an accomplished actress. Better known for the “first world problems” meme, her image has been used frequently to illustrate people of a certain privilege weeping over things that’s not exactly, well, tragic. Or difficult. Of course, that’s not what’s going on at all with the photo–as it goes with nearly all memes! We’re glad to see Bottini smiling these days. Being meme-famous is nothing to cry about!

Feeling Gangsta Steve

When a mother takes a picture of her son, she usually thinks that the world is going to praise him instead of coming up with negative remarks. That’s exactly what happened and lo and behold, the meme Scumbag Steve was born. So, what gives?

Apparently, it’s the outfit and his expression–basically, his entire look for the photo. But Blake Boston, the guy behind the meme, possibly in response to the comments, states through his lyrics that, “I have no regrets in my life… whatever I do. No matter what goes wrong, I can mess up on something, yet I still don’t regret it. Because that is who I am at the end of the day, I wouldn’t go back and change anything if I could travel into the past.” Oh-kay.

Being Gobsmacked

So far, we have looked at people with emotional reactions that end up on either side of the spectrum. But this famous GIF image from 2013 is used to denote a feeling of quiet disbelief. We have all seen this reaction of the person to the left where he just stares, wondering about what the heck is going on.  Many people online have since then ended up pasting that very GIF in responses on forums.

That said, everyone is perhaps not aware who the person in the picture really is. His name is Drew Scanlon, and he works as a video producer. He’s probably done some amazing work since the meme went viral but we find it hard to believe that  anything will ever be able to trump the fame he got from this GIF image.

Some Coffee?

While some people behind popular memes feel it skyrocketed their careers, there are those who find it a little ridiculous and think the internet audience should focus on something else. Dustin Mattson, a.k.a. the “Hipster Barrista,” seems to be one of them.

In an interview, he goes, “I find it frustrating and disappointing that so much attention was drawn to an effort to make a joke of the culinary industry and professional baristas. To me, it’s a good indication of how we praise farm-to-table cuisine, craft beer, and cocktail mixology, but it’s all right to have no regard for the specialty coffee business or those who work in it.” Mattson has a point.

That Particular Realization

On the internet, there are many memes which denote a specific meaning. Those become popular practically overnight. This meme is one such example, where the person simply looks surprised. It’s hard to determine what stunned the guy but the second photo gives meme creators more to work with.

Now, for a meme that’s quite famous, there’s very little known about the guy in it. Some photos alleged to be him have popped up in random corners of the internet through the years. Unlike many people in this list, he’s somehow managed to remain unknown.

Trying to Figure Things Out

From happiness to sadness, to straight out disbelief. Let’s now bring some real confusion into the picture – a feeling that is ever so often prevalent whenever faced with math problems. We are pretty sure that this image of Brazilian actress Renata Sorrah is taken in a different context, but the extremely confused look on her face has become a well-used source for many meme creators online.

This just goes to show how a perplexed look from one situation can be used in another one entirely.  Ever since the photo went viral, someone had also added equations on it. As a result, people routinely used Sorrah’s face to portray confusion regarding a particular situation.

A Genius Move

Whenever people in forums wanted to show off their, ahem, apparently brilliance or smarts, this is the meme they turn to. The guys just absolutely nails the kind of expression one would have when stumbling into something clever. Hence, the popularity of this meme. But who’s this guy?

Kayode Ewumi is an actor. The photo in question is from the show Hood Documentary, where he plays the character of Reece Simpson. Ewumi probably has a wonderful career ahead of him, but it will probably be difficult to surpass the fame that this particular meme has brought him over the years.

That Nervous Smile

It turns out that animals are not the only ones capable of showing displeased faces. In this case, we have a contender for Grumpy Cat. Anytime someone posts anything related to anxiety on social media, this meme would accompany it. Still, is the gentleman in the meme actually nervous?

Few people know that his name is  András Arató, from Hungary. Unlike other meme personalities who suddenly feel uncomfortable with all the fame that they are getting, he went along for the ride. And did he! After the initial photos were taken and he noticed their impact, he agreed to take more in order to get more people to rally behind his nervous and uncomfortable smile.

A History Channel Favorite

Anyone who watches the History channel will know that although it features some pretty interesting topics, quite a few are a bit out there. Sometimes, even waaay out there. One doesn’t need to watch the channel all the time to know about the ancient astronaut theory and Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. Yeah. That guy.

Here’s the gist of every show he’s been on: aliens basically invented everything. Not everyone believes Tsoukalos, of course, and no matter where one leans regarding aliens, he’s fun to watch. As for his reaction to the meme, he says, “I consider it an enormous privilege to have been embraced by the internet, all across the world.”

Rap Battle Delight

When this guy participated in a rap battle in 2009 he probably had no inkling that he was bound for internet meme stardom. The artist in question goes by the name of Conceited. In the contest, he competed against Jesse James. The resulting meme was the camera catching Conceited’s facial expression during a moment in the show.

These days, he is widely known within the MTV audience, mainly due to his musical talent. Despite that, in forums there are ongoing debates that becoming a meme played a large part in his becoming a household name.

A Pose That Took Over the Internet

The big dream of Instagram models and other people on the platform is to catch that perfect shot. Once that happens, the expectation is it goes viral, leads to fame, advertisements, sponsorships and a lot of money. There’s a lot of work that goes into taking that perfect shot. Kalin Elisa, on the other hand, seems to have simply struck a pose and became an instant sensation.

Known as the ‘squinting woman,’ Elisa’s meme is often used to illustrate confusion and bewilderment in social media and online forums. On her own, she has a big following on Twitter and Instagram. When people reached out to get her reaction to the popularity of the meme,  the model said, “My mission in life is to put as many smiles on people’s faces as possible before I depart this Earth. This has been a joy for my spirit!”

Success As A Kid

There is just something about the spontaneous reactions of kids that make them ideal for meme creators. Lil TerRio became a household name on the Vine platform (gosh, remember Vine???) since he really knew how to dance. The six-second videos he posted were enough to showcase his talent and become an internet sensation. He eventually moved on to Instagram.

He’s more popular than ever and boasts of a following close to 900,000. Unlike many other internet stars however who are only in it for the money, this kid decided that it would be a good thing to promote well-being. Hence he actively uses the platform to promote a healthy lifestyle and to diminish bullying in this world.

A Well-Known Artist

Some celebrities, such as musicians, we tend to think only got famous recently. It may be that prior to landing on the Billboard, they were already famous in a way that had little to do with singing. Cardi B is one of them. Yep. She’s the little cutie in the meme!

Now, Cardi B the artist needs no more introduction. But we’re betting never in a million years did anyone think that the girl in the meme would be the rapper known as Cardi B. We’re even sure a number of people don’t know until now she’s the girl! From an early age, it was already pretty clear becoming a style icon was in the stars.

More Famous Than You Thought

Every time someone writes something very strange on an internet forum, which to be honest, happens all the time, there is always one person who posts this particular meme. Who can forget the confused look on this guy’s face as well as the question marks sometimes added to the photo? Now, often when it comes to memes, they’re photos of random people that just happen to embody the kind of expression people want to emphasize. But this meme isn’t just some stranger. It’s actually a famous NBA player!

The person in the photo is actually Nick Young. He did have his glory days in the NBA, where he played for a period of ten years. He might not be playing much these days, but everyone online will remember him forever for this meme.

From Jail to Bae

Mugshots are never flattering. Along with the glaring light right in the face, people who usually have them taken hardly look their best in the first place. But not this guy. Arrested for grand theft and charged with other things, he had his mugshot taken like a boss. Make that a hot boss

Jeremy Meeks is his name and yes, he did spend a few years in prison after this photo was taken. It seems he’s not done stealing–but this time, hearts. Nothing illegal about that! A prison record would have most people struggling to find a job but Meeks was practically swamped with modeling contracts as soon as he was free. So far, he’s modeled for Tommy Hilfiger and launched a fashion line.

On the Run

IKEA has become known for furniture that almost requires a mechanical degree to assemble. And of course, the famous meatballs. But the company never expected that the brand would one day be associated with this cute little monkey. This photo is from an IKEA store in Toronto and features a monkey that seems to be on the run.

Canada is a country known for having very chilly days, so it’s fortunate that the IKEA monkey is dressed for the occasion. But he really was a monkey on the run when the photo was taken–animal control did eventually manage to catch him but not before he ran around the place for an hour. Maybe he was trying to find an easy-to-assemble banana.

Telling It Like It Is

When posting a video online, there’s really no telling what will happen next. Most hardly get any views and eventually, slink back into some forgotten dark corner of the internet. There are, of course, videos that go viral and impact a lot of people all of a sudden. That’s exactly what happened to Antoine Dodson.

The resulting meme from the screengrab of that video is from 2010, when Dodson was talking about an intruder. Serious as the subject of the video is, the internet turned it into various memes. Dodson seems to understand the power of becoming an internet sensation and has tried to use his new fame to create and jumpstart other opportunities.

Howbah Dah?

There are some memes which do have an impact on the internet community in general, but which might not change the life of the person being featured all that much. And then there are those memes which really manage to launch a person into stardom. This is the case of Danielle Bergoli, following an appearance on Dr. Phil.

A phrase she uttered in the show, “Cash me ousside, howbow dah?” became a viral hit and eventually led to a recording contract with Atlantic Records. As Bhad Bhabie, she became the youngest female rapper to land her first single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Is That Really How It Is?

There is just something about the expression that kids often have that tell grown-ups just how weird they behave at times. And that’s the exact look Gavin has on in the meme. Discovered first through Vine, the resulting meme with Gavin came from Vine clips initially posted by someone named Nick Mastodon

Since the meme hit the internet, people on internet forums have since used it widely, usually to show that they think whatever’s someone saying is completely bogus. On the right is a more recent photo of Gavin, looking a lot happier.

Why Ya Keep Lyin’, Man?

Quite a lot of meme stars start out from basically nothing, and then use their new fame in order to work their way up and start venturing into other things. It’s the reverse of this that happened to Nicholas Fraser. A talented singer to begin with, he posted a Vine singing Too Close. Since then, people have turned him into a meme, the image often used in calling people out online.

Fraser played it smart and managed to use his new popularity in order to become even more famous on YouTube. One thing led to another, and he can now add acting in his growing resume. He’s definitely headed for more success!

Doing Things With Style

This meme schooled the internet on a few things: age is just a number, the salt-and-pepper looks sells, and so does the beard. Jonathan Goldsmith is best remembered for the Dos Equis campaign that ran for a few years. The meme comes from a shot of the ad.

Over the years it has been used in order to promote self-confidence, even though the confidence of keyboard warriors on the internet is questionable at best. Goldsmith continues to work at 83 years old, and is involved in charities that focus on protecting the welfare of children.

The Chef You Didn't Know You Loved

The guy that brought back sensuality into the art of cooking has not only managed to start a buzz at restaurants but has also become an icon that is quite often used in memes. The  moment that has been used the most is when he salts the meat in his special, very sensual, delicate way. It doesn’t look like he’s salted the food enough but it sure does give cooking a theatrical touch.

Dubbed Salt Bae by the internet, whose real name is Nusret Gökçe, is a Turkish butcher. Since the video of him cutting and salting meat hit the internet and spawned memes, he has become a steakhouse entrepreneur, amassing a net worth of $50 million.

People at the Office

There are just some movie scenes which the producers perhaps did not intend to become iconic and the audience thought otherwise. In the movie Office Space, Gary Cole played the sarcastic, micromanaging supervisor known for his slow, overly enunciated line: “That’d be great.”

The resulting meme has since been used to denote when something needs to be urgently done immediately. And in a society which uses social media in order to take pride in procrastination, we sure could use Cole’s expression in order to get things going.

A Blast from the Past

Prior to playing Professor X in the X-Men movies, Sir Patrick Stewart was Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek universe. He played the role in various movies in the series and in the television show Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994. Most recently, he revisited the role in Star Trek: Picard.

The meme in question comes from Star Trek: The Next Generation, however. The show may be long over but thanks to streaming services, it has  attracted new audiences. That’s one possibility on how the meme came to be. We’re not sure who Picard is actually lecturing but his expression is perfect for conveying annoyance and exasperation–especially when debating with someone missing a few brain cells in an online forum.

All About Dwight

With the pandemic forcing a lot of people to work from home, it became even more clear that micro-managed work will never be applicable in such a setting–to think micromanaging is even ill-advised in the first place! Dwight Schrute, played by Rainn Wilson in the popular The Office, embodies the frustration employees feel having their work scrutinized every step of the way.

What a sane sit-down with a micromanaging supervisor can’t solve, a meme probably will. That’s the hope, anyway. As for Wilson, fans can catch him on the series Power

Perfection Can Also Be Mocked

This meme might not be familiar to many but it’s still quite popular. The internet–or anything online, really–is a different world. People get famous for doing the mundane–sometimes even by doing nothing. The ordinary, the absence of having done anything significant is celebrated. So anytime someone tries to show off as being perfect online, the internet is ready to strike. This meme is everything when it comes to perfection.

Not surprisingly, the internet was ready to tear it down. Though the meme has been used negatively more often, the lady behind it has fortunately been unaffected. Skai Jackson is a television personality and has made the move to the big screen as of late. It’s the perfect move to be above all negativity.

Go For It

Since we can clearly see that the original pic and the new pic of the girl in question here differ with a few years, it is safe to assume that the first one was taken quite some time back. It was also taken during a commercial for tacos. Isn't it amazing how those small moments within the short commercials can turn into something that lingers in the internet ether for years and years on end?

The actor, named Mia Agraviador, as seen in a recent photo, has  grown a lot since the commercial was filmed and the meme that was created. Despite looking a lot different from the meme now, the latter is still very popular.

Fell Short

It goes without saying that the Olympics are pretty competitive. An athlete has to go through, and win, a number of meets, competitions, and such in order to qualify. And once the athlete qualifies, has to train even harder to at least make it past the initial elimination rounds. It’s not easy getting that gold–and all that hard work will not guarantee it. Which is exactly why U.S. gymnast McKayla Maroney looked the way she did during the awarding ceremony.

Believing she won the gold, a tweak in the judges’ score landed her “only” a silver. Most people (read: non-athletes) would be stoked to score a silver but not Maroney. Her dissatisfied look has since been used in memes all over. She’s now retired from competitive gymnastics and has embarked on a singing career, having released two singles so far.

Wanted Them to Win

When some people decide to support their team, things can get a bit emotional. That seems to have been the case for this flutist  who shed a tear while playing after her team had been ousted from the tournament. For us regular mortals, this  might not be that big of deal. But then, most of us aren’t really passionate about. . .stuff.

A camera caught the tearful moment and it didn’t take long for it to become a meme. It became so famous that Roxanne Chalifoux, the crying flutist, even appeared on Jimmy Fallon!

Morpheus Has a Message for You

The Matrix is one of the most iconic movies of all time. Whether from the first movie or the sequels, people have so many lines to choose from to use as memes. One of these features Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne, and he says, “What if I told you. . .?”

Memes weren’t a thing when the movies came out in the early aughts, but because the Matrix remains popular, and is still widely available through streaming services, a new generation has discovered and enjoyed them. In 2021, a fourth movie was released in the series, titled, The Matrix Resurrections.

Missing the Matrix

There are some people who are just impossible to dislike, and among movie actors Keanu Reeves is probably on the top of that list. Even though he has become immensely famous, he’s known for being someone who looks out for the little guy and is very down to earth. Like, he gifted each member of the Matrixstunt team a Harley-Davidson. He’s also known as one of the few actors who’ve taken a pay cut without any complaint in order to pull bigger-name stars to a project. One can say his generosity is quite remarkable considering he had a past that was quite difficult.

With that in mind, the Sad Keanu meme was born. A paparazzi photograph of the actor, it has since become the meme that perfectly shows how lonely or disappointed a person is. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, he was finally asked about the story behind the meme. He said, “I was thinking. I had some stuff going on. I was hungry!”

Telling the Truth

When people online decide to take one particular movie moment and turn it into one of the most famous memes of all times, no one really knows which moment it’s going to be. In a scene from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, where characters discuss the journey into Mordor, Boromir, played by Sean Bean, declares, “One does not simply walk into Mordor.”

Since then, people have made the scene into a meme that begins with, “One does not simply. . .” and is used in a whole range of different situations to point out that a person simply shouldn’t just jump into something just because. The meme is also famous due to Bean, who’s been known to play memorable characters that meet horrific deaths on screen.

Paying Tribute

If anyone ever managed to capture the perfect sarcastic, meme-able look, then it was certainly Willy Wonka. While the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was quite popular, it was released a few decades before the dawn of the internet. Thanks to the movie’s status as a timeless classic, it’s watched over and over by new generations of children and they got to know the actor behind the character, Gene Wilder.

Sadly, Wilder passed away in 2016. But his legacy lives on thanks to this meme, which is used to point out an obvious flaw in another person’s argument. This, and the movie of course, which is guaranteed to be loved by generations to come.

A Bit Extra Smug

Many people who became memes found success following the viral hit, and used it to jumpstart or be involved in artistic and personal endeavors. Except for this guy. Need we say who he is? Fine. Leo. Leonardo DiCaprio!

We won’t go into the stuff DiCaprio has done because it will take a day. Or two. Or more. So let’s just focus on this meme. Taken from the movie Django Unchained, the meme is used to make fun of anyone online who tries to project themselves better than they actually are in real life.

Jailbird Hottie

It turns out that the guys are not the only ones getting famous because of a mug shot, as this particular meme bears witness to. The person in the photo is Meagan McCullough who got this photo taken after she was arrested due to some poor driving. Getting arrested would lead to a lot of criticism, and having a mugshot circulate even more. With McCullough, that’s not exactly what happened.

As expected on the internet once the mug shot became public, men started declaring they wanted to marry her (yikes). It’s not surprising that McCullough that her photo circulated online: “I don’t think it’s that good a picture — there are other ones I would prefer.”

Professor Cool

People often think that professors are stuffy types, often old, and very traditional. Then there’s also the tweed jackets with the elbow patches. While to a certain extent some real-life professors do fit the stereotype, there are others who don’t really conform to it and even go as far as breaking it. Let’s take a look at this guy.

Professor Tom Winter has actually been skateboarding to class since 1993 but it wasn’t until 2011 when a student took a cellphone photo of him and–well, we know what happened after that. Winter had no idea he was a viral sensation until his students alerted him and pointed him to Reddit–a platform he didn’t even know anything about!

A Look That Does Not Fail

If there is one look that really seems to hit home with the meme audience then it must be this one that shows utter confusion. Regardless whether one’s a kid, a teenager, or an adult, there’s just something about this expression that’s food for thought for the internet crowd. And where there’s an internet crowd, so is a group waiting to turn this into a meme.

The meme comes from a scene from the movie We’re the Millers. The actor who blurted out the famous, “You guys are getting paid?” line is Will Poulter, probably best known for his roles in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and the interactive science fiction movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Poulter has been involved in other film projects, and he will next be seen in the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy.

But You Said…!

Haven’t we all by now seen the mash-up of the woman who screams at the somewhat arrogant, smug, smirking cat? The way people online have twisted and turned that meme has made it almost overused. Luckily, it still has to outstay its popularity and the screaming woman is a lot calmer and happier these days.

To the right is a photo of her in a more calm setting, and maybe that is because the cat isn’t bothering her anymore. Let’s face it: some people get along with cats, others just don’t. A huge loss for the latter since cats are amazing.
